Nina Watt & Jennifer Scanlon spent two full weeks working with Repertory Dance Theatre and dancers from Utah Valley University setting Doris Humphrey’s masterwork, Passacaglia and Fugue in C Minor, this past January. They took some time to sit down with Linda C. Smith to talk about this masterwork, and their experience with it.

Nina Watt toured internationally with the Limon Dance Company from 1972-2001, serving as Artistic Associate from 1992-2006. She danced major roles by over 25 choreographers, including two solos made for her by Alwin Nikolais and Doug Varone. Her career included two State Department sponsored tours and a 1995 White House performance. Critically cited as “the perfect Limon dancer,” “a dancer of genius” and “one of the most important modern dancers of her generation,” Ms. Watt is a 2002 recipient of the New York Dance and Performance Award for Sustained Achievement.

Jennifer Scanlon, former principal dancer and associate artistic director of the Limón Dance Company, studied at Ted Shawn’s Jacob’s Pillow Dance Festival and the Julliard School before joining Limón in 1963. Ms. Scanlon was a full-time faculty member at The Boston Conservatory for 20 years teaching Limon Technique and Repertory and Alexander Technique.

Passacaglia and Fugue in C Minor will be part of VOICES (April 11-13). RDT is thrilled to have 10 students from Utah Valley University joining us on stage for this performance.
