RDT's Annual Choreographer Competition: Fundraiser & Gala

RDT’s annual fundraising event with a twist. Join us for an entertaining process and a party that feature dances created in “record breaking” time by local choreographers vying for a commission.

Pampered with dinner, desserts and a signature cocktail by Utah Foods, the audience will be invited to award a commission for a new work by participating artists.

Afterwards, all will join performers on stage for live music and dancing with the Joe Muscolino Band!

Congratulations to the following choreographers who will compete for an RDT commission in 2017-2018 season.

    Nick Blaylock

    Nick Blaylock is a choreographer/dancer based in Salt Lake City, Utah and an MFA candidate in the Modern Dance Program in the University of Utah's School of Dance. Nick's creative work has been commissioned throughout the United States by studios, pre-professional companies, and universities. He received three consecutive choreographic awards from Southern Illinois University's Theater and Dance Department, and his work has been presented in three American College Dance Association Gala Concerts in two national regions.

    Aubry Dalley

    Aubry Dalley graduated with a BA in Dance Education from Brigham Young University. During her studies, she toured internationally with BYU's Contemporary Dance Theatre and choreographed for the student company, DancEnsemble. She currently teaches as Adjunct Faculty and is an assistant director for Contemporary Dance Theatre at Brigham Young University. She directs the dance program and is chair of the Performing Arts Department at Mountain View High School in Orem, Utah. Aubry has been honored to choreograph for a variety of groups including Utah Regional Ballet, BYU's Contemporary Dance Theatre, and ON SITE mobile dance series. Her work has won awards in Utah's Shakespearean Festival, Provo's Take Two Choreography Competition, and Utah Regional Ballet's Choreography Design Competition.

    Eric Handman

    Eric Handman is an American choreographer and an Associate Professor in the Modern Dance program at the University of Utah's School of Dance. He was a member of New York Theatre Ballet and then a dancer in various New York-based contemporary dance companies such as Doug Varone and Dancers, Nicholas Leichter Dance and Joy Kellman and Company. His choreography has been commissioned by various companies and departments across the United States, including the Kennedy Center in Washington, DC and abroad. In 2014 he was a winner of two choreography competitions: the 2014 New Visions Choreography Competition for Idaho Dance Theater and the 2014 "Pretty Creatives" International Choreographic Competition for the Northwest Dance Project.

    Nichele Van Portfleet

    Nichele Van Portfleet worked as a dance-artist throughout the San Francisco Bay Area before relocating to attend the University of Utah's graduate program in Modern Dance this past Fall. Nichele received her B.A. in Theater Arts & Dance from Sonoma State University, from which her dance, Parched, traveled to Arizona for the American College Dance Festival West (2013), receiving the honor of Gala selection. Upon graduating she returned to SSU as a guest choreographer and Adjunct Professor of Dance, while dancing in San Francisco and working as a founding member of Hatch Performance Collective.

How It works

  1. VIP Cocktail party

    Toast to RDT with a signature cocktail, wine or beer. Wander around the studios to watch choreographers work. View auction items and enter initial bids.

  2. Gala Dinner

    Pamper yourself with dinner from Utah Food Services.

  3. Final Touches

    Place your final bids on auction items. Wander to studios to see choreographers put final touches on pieces.

  4. Performance

    Enter the theatre and watch all four pieces be performed. After seeing all four pieces, you will have a chance to vote with your wallet to determine which choreographer will be assigned a commission for next year. Watch each piece and vote (with your number) for your favorite. In order to vote during this time you will have to have a registered number.

  5. Dancing & Dessert

    Everyone is invited on stage for dancing with The Joe Muscolino Band and dessert. Voting will continue.

    The 2017 COMMISSION will be awarded at 10:00 pm.

 

HOW TO VOTE FOR YOUR FAVORITE CHOREOGRAPHER

There are 2 ways to vote for your favorite choreographer:

ON YOUR PHONE:

  1. VISIT www.rdtutah.org/vote
  2. Fill out the form and select the choreographer(s) you'd like to vote for.
  3. Complete payment using credit card

REGISTERED NUMBER

  1. Register a NUMBER (at a REGISTRATION TABLE or pre-register here>>)
  2. When you arrive, you will be asked to swipe your credit card. We will not charge your card unless you vote or bid at the event.
  3. After all choreographers have shown their work, you will be prompted to raise your number at various amounts to vote for your favorite. If you raise your number, you are committing to pay that amount.
  4. Your votes will be counted and totaled.
  5. At the end of the night, you can check out with cash or check OR - your credit card will be charged with the amount that you voted with.

THE CHOREOGRAPHER WHO RAISES THE MOST MONEY WILL BE AWARDED A COMMISSION FOR RDT NEXT SEASON.
